GUILTY OF BEING BEST

Put two former lawyers and two former school teachers all from the same family together, and it's obvious what you get - great coffee.

OK, so it's not that obvious, but this family's Dalwood company, High Trees Estate Coffee, has taken out the non-alcoholic beverages section of the National Food Challenge Competition held in Sydney.

And they beat some products from the big guns in the beverage industry, Cadbury-Schweppes and Coca-Cola.

High Trees is owned by former Sydney lawyers Lynne and Philipp Kreutzer with Lynne's parents, former school teachers, Wilma and Hal Sherlock.

We've always thought that our coffee is good, but it's good to get some feedback," Philipp said.

The family's 10,000 tree plantation near Alstonville was established on an old dairy farm seven years ago, and they've been producing commercial quantities of coffee for the past two years.

They hit the export market before the domastic market, and have been sending coffee to Denmark, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

"We retired to what we thought was a relaxing lifestyle, but we're busier than we've ever been before," Lynne said.

The family use Arabica beans and produce their coffee on-site from tree to cup. And the plantation has just been certified as organic.

You can buy High Trees coffee locally at the Ballina Visitors Centre, Macadamia Castle and Alstonville's Kolinda Gallery.
